Hair has always been a constant in ARROJO Cosmetology School alum, Cristina Mineo’s life. When she became a student here, it was no surprise that she flew through the program. We caught up with Cristina to learn more about her experience with us and see what success her ARROJO education has brought her.
How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
Hair has always been a part of my identity. Growing up in a Latino home, my hair was a prized possession. You either had "pelo bueno," good hair (straight, loose waves) or "pelo malo," bad hair (kinky, tight curls). I've always wanted to help women feel beautiful in with their natural hair. I love that the beauty industry is always adopting new definitions of what is beautiful and I hope my work will influence beauty norms to be more inclusive and see the beauty in all hair types.
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
I did my research, called, and then came in for a tour. ARROJO by far had the best facility, program, educators, and kit for the best price.
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
The wisdom of the educators! I tried to take diligent notes of everything I saw and heard but what stuck with me the most were the sound bites from Joey, Stacia and the other educators. I can recall Grace saying, "Remember, you're not Picasso" while we learned to base, Joey instructing us about the intensity of a real salon environment, and Stacia's countless encouragements when we were learning to to hold the water hose for the first time. Their education team goes above & beyond.
What is your favorite new skill?
I love understanding the color wheel and using it to color hair!
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
Take advantage of the time in school and pay attention to everything. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself on the salon floor, when everyone else says no to do something, go for it! This is the best time to make mistakes because you have staff around you who are willing to help you along the way.
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
I was very fortunate after graduating cosmetology school. I finished my hours on a Monday, went on a job interview on Tuesday, and started working as an apprentice that Thursday. I work at Ouidad Salon, a curly hair salon in midtown. I really love the atmosphere and the people I work with. ARROJO Cosmetology School really set me up for career success!
