Growing up a dancer, stage hair and makeup has always been a part of Allison's identity. She realized her goal of opening up her own salon after being a student in Nick Arrojo’s very own cosmetology class. We caught up with Allison to talk about what she’s been up to since graduating from ARROJO.
How did you become interested in the Beauty Industry?
Dance was a huge part of my life, so I grew up on hairspray and stage makeup. Eventually, hair became part of my identity. I’ve always had very thick hair. I remember in middle school I saved up all my allowance and bought myself my first hair straightener. I walked into to school the next day and all my friends were amazed. They asked where I got my hair done, but I had done it myself. That “feeling” was IT! I knew hair was what I wanted to do with my life.
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
I had been researching cosmetology schools all over NYC when I came across ARROJO. I wanted to go in and see if it was the right place for me. Once I stopped in I knew right away that it was where I needed to be to further my career. The school was immaculate and professional overall. I LOVED it!
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
The educators were a huge part. They really cared about each of us and our success. They made sure we did what we had to do to be able to reach our goals. I was lucky enough to be in the class that Nick Arrojo himself taught. It was a great learning and life experience. What I've learned from him I take on with me through each of my clients.
What is your favorite new skill?
Every day I find myself learning something new. The newest skill I’m working on right now is building a name for myself. I've been teaching myself day by day how to manage my own business and take my career to the next level. I'm one person, taking my passion and turning it into a reality.
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
The future is in your hands. You can be anything you want to be as long as you are LOVING what you are doing!!
- Stand out in your own way
- Always further your education
- Take advantage while you are in school- you won't get that time or experience back!
- Challenge yourself every day
- Have a mentor (learn from them) - the good, the bad -they will guide you
- Make goals
- Do what you love and you'll never "work" a day in your life
What did you do after graduation and where are you working now?
After graduation, I received my license and was working in a salon for a few years as an assistant. Shortly after, I realized I wanted to become my own boss. I knew I would be taking a risk leaving my comfort zone to try to pursue something that could possibly not work out. But with time I began growing my clientele and my craft. When you follow your passion everything falls into place on its own....
Currently, I am attending Nassau Community College to complete my Business Associates Degree. I graduate this upcoming Spring of 2018!
