Today we catch up with Olga Postolachi, an ARROJO Cosmetology School Graduate who has become a sought-after editorial stylist, represented by iconic NYC agency, Kate Ryan. Here's here story.
How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
I have always been attracted to beauty since an early age and I would often find myself making others feel beautiful. I always loved fixing my friends hair, doing their makeup and giving them beauty advice. After I graduated college in Bucharest with a degree in political science I realized very quickly that politics doesn’t bring people together the way I had hoped. But for me beauty does. So when the opportunity came to move to NYC I knew I had to pursue my passion and follow my dreams.
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
I really wanted to learn from the best in the industry. From the moment I stepped into Arrojo Cosmetology School I felt inspired and that made the decision easy. I knew I was in the right place at the right time. The professional atmosphere compared to many other schools I visited really struck me and the reputation of the whole place was really good.
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
The hands-on real world training and interaction with clients and the student competitions which pushed students to do their best. I still have the flat iron in my kit that I won as a result of taking the first place in the updo competition.:-)
Also, I learned that educating your clients about how to care about their hair is as important as doing their hair.
What is your favorite new skill?
I don’t really have one favorite skill, which is what makes the beauty and fashion industry evolve constantly. I like to test new skills and different techniques a lot and break the rules when it comes to product applications in order to get the desired texture. I think there are no boundaries to your creativity in discovering and achieving new skills everyday.
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
Just be passionate about what you do, give a 100% everyday and it will pay off. The important thing is to stay busy and moving forward with your work. Even if you aren’t satisfied with where you are now, it will lead to something else if you stick with it. Then that will lead to something and soon the ball is rolling on your career.
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
After graduation I worked as a freelance Hairstylist and Makeup Artist on sets of many photo and video productions, for clients both in editorial and advertising photography industry. Currently I am represented by Kate Ryan Inc – a New York agency that represents artists.
