Today we put the spotlight on Dana Pastore, one of many students who chose to come to ARROJO to kick-start their second career. Now a high-flying professional, take a peek inside her world. . .
How did you become interested in the beauty
After many unfulfilling years in the corporate marketplace, I finally gave myself permission to follow my creative dreams and pursue a career in hairdressing.
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School? Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
I spent many hours researching 'what is the best hair school in New York?' online and ARROJO was at the top of the list. What stands out more about my experience at ARROJO was the director of the school and the teachers that believed in me, a 'non-traditional' cosmetology student with no background in hair.
What is your favorite new skill?
There are so many skills I've obtained over the course of my studies and apprenticeship that it would be close to impossible to pick just one. But what I have built on is my own personal infrastructure; creating a new sense of confidence, stamina, and creative self-discipline.
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
Keep your head down, focus and listen. Treat each model as if it is your client and your classmates as though they are your co-workers. Establishing professional habits early on will make it easier to transition from the atmosphere of school to real life work experience. Put yourself out there. Email and have your resume be on point. Awesome mentors aren't just handed to you. You ARE in control of your destiny.
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
I am currently working at The Paint Box in Greenpoint, BK. Finding my home here was a combination of persistence and kismet. I became an apprentice under the mentoring of Jennifer Regec last February and am now on the floor as a colorist and men's barber. Without Jenny's hands-on teaching method and confidence in me, I would not have come this far so early in my career. I consider myself blessed to be part of a unique and dynamic salon family.
