There are so many budding hairdressers from all walks of life. It makes us proud when we see that our boutique school has helped to make their dreams come true. Which is why we spotlight our alumni. Today we catch up with Class 24 Graduate Samantha Thomas, a stylist who has found her niche in the bright lights of the big city.
Samantha, please tell us your story. . .
I've always loved hair and beauty. Growing up I constantly experimented with my own hair color and styles. An updated look is such a confidence boost, I wanted to inspire that confidence in others. Visiting other cosmetology schools, I felt overwhelmed with size of the class rooms and didn't want to be just a number. Walking through the doors of ARROJO cosmetology, I knew I had found the school for me with its warm, inviting staff and boutique feel. My educators really made my experience. They encouraged me to excel and tap into talents I didn't know I had! One thing that stuck out, was that they encouraged us to be individuals and find our own unique styles.
After graduation I began working at a salon that I just did not feel comfortable being myself in; so I started working in Westchester County, where I live. But still, I couldn't shake off the appeal of the bright lights and big city. From there I moved to Hairroin Salon in Herald Square NYC. After completing their apprentice program in a little over a year, I began taking my own clients full time. It's been a year since then, and I'm now growing as a stylist. I have entered two styling competitions since, assisted a few photo and video shoots, as well as styling hair for a Sonia Kashuk shoot. My favorite skill that I get to utilize behind the chair at Hairroin is creating a look that fits my clients' lifestyle and personality.
My advice to current and prospective students is to never doubt yourself. Welcome the experience with an open mind and allow your educators to teach and inspire you through your journey.
