Today we are catching up with Class 23 Graduate Molly Benko, who is fulfilling her dreams as a stylist in NYC.
Molly, how did you become interested in the beauty industry?
I was exposed to the industry at a very young age. My mom is a hair stylist and still is. I always knew it was something I wanted to do and just ran with it. I always loved trying to figure my own hair out, which made it more of a challenge to figure out others!
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
I chose ARROJO because when I decided to move to pursue this as a career, I remember googling "the best cosmetology schools in the US" and ARROJO was the first link I saw. My mom always told me that "education is so important in this industry” and the rest is history!
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
I loved that everything was so hands on. We were able to pull inspiration in all areas of the city- museums, parks ect. Nothing was more motivating than seeing the best of the best demonstrate and teach you how to succeed.
What is your favorite new skill?
Cutting has always been my strong point, but since taking on color I've been having so much fun. Recently, I've been exploring different shapes in undercutting. I recently had a write up in Bust magazine demonstrating how to use clippers and trimmers to create the funnest designs!
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
My advice to those still in school and going to through your apprenticeship is that it is SO worth it. Every model you need, every bit of corrective criticism, and every class you take, absorb every little bit. Once you’re able to build your clientele and have the freedom to create, you'll remember why you went to school in the first place.
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
After graduation, I took the time to really find the best salon for me. You have to really connect with a salon in order to grow. Currently I'm a stylist at Fringe Salon NY in the Lower East Side and Fringe Salon BK. After apprenticing for 2 years, it has been such a fun ride to work and create on so many projects at Fringe.
