How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
I come from a very long line of hair stylists and started acting when I was 7, so I kind of grew up on a set and have worked with the best for years. It was a very natural progression for me to become a Stylist.
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
I went to Cosmetology school way back when I was 18, the same school my grandparents went to, but it wasnt a good fit at the time. I was looking for an advanced Academy. One that would push me to be the best in my industry, but Arrojo wasn't around yet. 9 years later I googled best Cosmetology School in NYC and the Academy was the first to pop up. I went in and toured the school, met the staff, and immediately applied.
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
I had the BEST education at Arrojo. Especially when it came to color theory. Our educators made sure we knew every in and out they could when it came to color correction/application/placement. I still have all of my head sheets organized in a binder and refer back to them all the time! Simply the best and I realize how lucky my class was to be taught hands on razor technique by Nick himself! The program was hard, but it helped lay the strongest foundation possible for my career.
What is your favorite new skill?
I'm learning new ones all of the time!! The invention of balayage has revolutionized hair color forever, it gives clients that kid hair, so much dimension and movement! All of that complex color theory has paid off!! Color is a very large part of my clientele. Right now I am obsessed with watching barbering videos. I think mens hair is making a huge comeback and even though mens cuts aren't a huge part of my schedule, I am mesmerized by the perfect fade. The best thing about this business is you can never be too creative!
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
If you are motivated and give 100%, no matter how menial the task, you can definitely move quickly through the ranks. We have all cleaned toilets, emptied garbage cans, and swept floors. It wont be forever. Just keep plowing through, showing up with a smile on your face, a dedication to your education and you'll get there. And to those who are thinking about applying, if you are really passionate about becoming a stylist there is no better school- so do it!
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
I immediately started apprenticing at a small salon on the LES and quickly moved from assistant to junior stylist to stylist. I am now at one of the top salons in the world Bloom Beauty Lounge in Chelsea and I am so proud to be a part of our team. I have amazing clients and a beautiful work environment with bosses who make sure we have the best continuing education, product lines, and support we need to come in and rock it out everyday.
I am a woman who ascribes to Ask, Believe, and Receive. Every morning I get up and set my intentions to the universe to put clients in my chair who are going to be compatible and loyal to me and I am one of the fastest growing stylists at my salon. So I guess its working! This is such a wonderful business to be in if you are creative and want to touch peoples lives in a positive way.
I wish all of the current Arrojo students the best of luck. You have this amazing opportunity to be educated by the best, show up early and ready to learn and you will do wonderfully!
