This look was created by Gina Arrojo and Amanda Jenkins, the School and Artistic Directors of ARROJO Cosmetology, for ARROJO Underground, an annual live show where we ask our salon stylists and school educators to inspire us with their latest vanguard hairdressing trends and styles in a high energy runway show.
The event took place inside ARROJO TriBeCa, a brand new education facility that will eventually house hundreds of Cosmetology Students. Fittingly, then, this audacious look stole the show, drawing rapturous applause from an audience in awe.
Colored by Gina, cut and styled by Amanda, we love the high fashion, attention-grabbing nature of the style. Using a combination of inspirations, from African culture to the texture of textiles to modern street wear, the finished style offers much to enjoy –– beaded bangs, complex colors, cascading shapes, effortless beauty.
Here’s Gina to talk about the inspiration:
“My inspiration for the hair color was weaving, and fibers that are coming undone. I wanted to create a feeling of fine textiles within the panels of the hair. I used several shades of blue from Goldwell’s Topchic and Elumen lines to create dimension on the interior. To create this effect, I used horizontal panels on either side of the model’s parting. I took a half inch section of hair and, working from the bottom to the top of the panel, I backcombed at the top of the section very neatly, manipulating the same strands of hair with each comb up the hair shaft. Then I painted a 3 inches thick horizontal line on the backcombed panel. I had two blue lines on one side and one on the other side. I only used one color formulation per panel, and used various formulas which got brighter and brighter as I progressed up the head. I began with Topchic, relying on A-Mix combos and finished with Elumen for extra brightness, using combos of Turquoise and Blue. I love the effect and how different and soft it looks. My colleague, Amanda, cut and styled the look, using beads to add to the overall feeling. –– Gina Arrojo, School Director, ARROJO Cosmetology School.
