How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
Growing up I was always interested in beauty, playing with my mom's makeup and reading beauty magazines. I started to dye my hair myself at age 12, and everything evolved from there.
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
When I was looking for beauty schools I wanted to be in New York City, and ARROJO was there listed as one of the best, so I went.
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
Arianna Marino was an amazing educator, as well as hairdresser. She was so hands-on and creative. She really believed in me and taught me things I use to this very day.
What is your favorite new skill?
Although it's not a skill, I have become an educator both for apprentices at our salon as well as at our advanced academy. At our advanced academy, we have students from all over the world. Through teaching here, I have learned so much about hairdressing in other parts of the world, as well as learning how to effectively communicate to large groups of people, which has helped me communicate better with my clients as well.
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
Assist as much as you can, and work as hard as you can. Assisting different colorists gave me the chance to learn how the same techniques and formulas are all done differently by each person. I was able to take techniques I learned from each person I assisted, combine them, and turn them into my own. Also, don't give up. Assisting is hard, and the hours are long (sometimes it seems like it will never end!) but the payoff is worth it in the end.
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
After graduation (which was over five years ago) I went straight to work at Eva Scrivo Salon, which is where I currently am a senior colorist and educator, and have quickly built a strong portfolio for myself doing all types of editorial work such as national campaigns for the NFL, Harpers Bazar, and Vogue as well as being featured in Allure, Good Housekeeping and Modern Salon.
