How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
From a very early age I was interested in beauty! I always found it super fun and rewarding to make people look and feel great. My journey did not take the typical path, and I am not a typical hair stylist. I was a successful producer for 10 years, and began that career in the place where I am from, Australia. Producing, for me, was always a means to an end and not my higher purpose. I felt intrinsically drawn to NYC, the way I have always been drawn to hair, fashion and beauty. My passion for hair has always been my foundation, and it has always been personal. With the goal of working to save up and get my Green card, my mission from there on out was to live my dream. I made a "hairpin turn' towards my passions and I feel fortunate to do what I love, and inspired by the creative people I am surrounded by every day.
I am drawn to editorial styling, and made that my focus throughout cosmetology school where I assisted editorial stylists for free and worked to get my name out there, including on agency stylist assistant rosters. Since May 2014, I've networked and hustled nonstop to meet and learn from as many stylists, photographers, makeup artists to form a network of incredible people to collaborate with. With work I've assisted on and done published in Fault Magazine, Grazia Italia Magazine, Pitch-Present Magazine, New Yorker Magazine, and Refinery 29, I am truly starting to live my dream.
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
I researched every cosmetology school in NYC and was drawn to ARROJO by the modern, fresh look of the school, the smaller class sizes, and extensive curriculum that goes above and beyond the other schools.
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
The teachers were amazing and they really gave me the confidence to explore my creativity and give me the skills to grow as a stylist. The experience in the student salon was so good to really put what I'd learned into the real world and just go for it!
What is your favorite new skill?
Styling and coloring
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
Be confident in yourself and be open to all opportunities the course throws at you! You really get out what you put in. Most importantly, listen and learn from the teachers, I personally learned great tips and tricks from each and every educator.
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
I continued working to grow my business in editorial and commercial shoots, worked at NYFW, presented my graduation model at ARROJO's Hair Expo and attended some Advanced Education classes. I am currently juggling my time between editorial shoots and freelance producer work to make ends meet! (Pictured below: Abbi's model from ARROJO Expo 2014)
