As a member of our Part Time cosmetology program, Tony Kane Baker is learning how to turn his passion for hair into a lifelong career. Continue reading to keep up with TK!
Where are you from?
I’m a native New Yorker, originally from the Bronx.
How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
I started working in a salon when I was 16, and I liked the atmosphere. People left feeling good about themselves. I always had a passion for the industry but I never did anything about it until my roommate inspired me to follow my dream. He performs as a drag queen, and I started helping him with his hair and makeup. It was a big production and I liked the concept of using hair and makeup to transform the image of a person.
Why did you choose ARROJO cosmetology school?
I visited other schools in the city but didn’t feel like they were for me. My tour at ARROJO was informative, and the school seemed organized with a good atmosphere for learning. Everyone was helpful and knowledgeable. I knew this was where I needed to be.
What inspires you most?
The most inspiring thing about school is that I’m making my mom proud even though she has passed away. I know she is still watching over me. I can feel her smile when I’m in school. My favorite new skill is color; I like the chemistry and theory behind it.
What has been your biggest challenge so far?
My biggest challenge is still myself. I’m very hard on myself. If I can’t get a new task I feel defeated but my educators give constant support and encourage me to relax and realize I’m learning new skills.
What do you want to do after you graduate?
After graduation, I would love to work at ARROJO as a colorist. And audition for Ru Paul’s Drag Race!
