Taking class with one of the world’s most iconic hairdressers, getting tickets to one of the world’s most iconic hair and beauty shows, learning the art and craft of hair coloring from one of the world’s most iconic manufacturers, March at ARROJO Cosmetology saw our students exposed to unique and memorable experiences. To tell all about it, all-star Cosmetology Educator, Laura Martin, writes this short, insightful, and fun report.
March at ARROJO Cosmetology was full of inspiration from industry greats. We started with a visit from an award-winning hairstylist with over 45 years of experience, Yosh Toya. Although now in his seventies, Yosh is still taking his career in new directions. His latest mission is to visit one hundred cosmetology schools in the US and one hundred more in Japan. This was his second visit to ARROJO, and an exciting experience for our students. Gabby, from Class 9, called his visit “inspiring” and said, “watching his freehand technique was awesome. It’s great to see such a unique approach to cutting.” Nicholas, from Class 12, agreed: “I really enjoyed his demo. Seeing how he cuts hair really bridges the gap for me between technical aspects and artistic vision.” Yosh’s cutting methods include freehand cutting and dry cutting; advanced techniques that most cosmetology students never get to see. But here at ARROJO, our holistic approach includes exposing students to a broad range of techniques and methodologies.
One of the best ways to see the full spectrum of the hair industry is at a major trade show, and all of our students attended one of the biggest, the International Beauty Show (IBS), New York, March 7-8. Nick Arrojo, school owner, bought tickets for all of our students to this exciting event after everyone met a retail sales goal that earned them their ticket. This clever incentive gave students a duel benefit: one, the opportunity to attend an inspirational show; and two, learning about the importance of retail, client consultations, and the power of communication.
IBS is a huge show, with an impressive list of vendors, mainstage presentations from industry giants, and classes on cutting, styling, treatments, and more. Deirdre, from Class 12, had a wonderful experience. “There were so many interesting tools that I never knew about. The best part was mainstage, it was great to see the work of so many top people.” Isabelle, from class 9, agreed — although her favorite part was seeing Nick Arrojo and the ARROJO show. “I love how ARROJO has such classic takes on everything. It was really inspiring to see the warmth of Nick’s interaction with the audience, and how much people responded to him.”
At a time of year when so many people are looking for a change in their style to go with the changing season, Rain, one of our educators, has been teaching her students about the transformative power of hair color. She says, “It’s amazing, the whole transition that happens with color, seeing it change right before your eyes. It’s so exciting for the students.” And on a recent trip to the Wella Studio, our students had another chance to enhance their color knowledge in the Wella Experience class. “It gave me a deeper understanding of formulation and the chemistry of color,” said class 11 student, Jon.
From watching industry leaders to working hands-on with color techniques, our students had an exceptional month and, in April, there’s more magic to come. Stay tuned… –– Laura Martin, ARROJO Cosmetology Educator.
