Nowadays more hairdressers are cutting with a razor instead of scissors. It’s a relatively new haircutting tool, only coming to prominence in the 1990’s. Pioneered by Nick Arrojo, he became famous for using it to create cool, sexy, modern low-maintenance hairstyles. Now he’s teaching our cosmetology students the skills that gave him lionized status in the industry.
World-renowned for his education and inspiration, as well as his phenomenal skill-set, Nick Arrojo has been teaching one session a week for Class 8 ARROJO cosmetology students, throughout their entire program. The goal is to keep the curriculum fresh, current, and share with each student sophisticated techniques and the most creative elements of cosmetology — things that won’t be found at any other school.
The razor is chief among them. A contemporary and advanced skill, razoring enables the hair to swing and move, gives a modern, jagged line, makes changing texture easy, removes excessive weight, and brings extra softness and versatility to every style.
Class 8 is now six months into their program, just one month from Graduation. We thought this a great time to ask them about being taught by Nick, and about the razor. Here’s what they had to say:
“The opportunity to learn first-hand from Nick is amazing. From learning how to cut a one-length line to learning how to cut a razor-bob, it is a special experience; I feel privileged. I have loved the last six-months and I thank Nick for taking the time to teach us, and all the staff for being so supportive, and for believing I can become a great hairstylist.” — Victoria
“I love the razor because of how versatile it is. It removes bulk and weight and length and creates texture at the same time. I feel fortunate that I’m learning from the best in the field, Nick Arrojo. Using this advanced tool has opened new doors for me as a stylist. I think it’s the best tool ever!” — Samantha
“The coolest thing about razoring is creating a face frame in one panel of hair — cutting from short to long, instead of cutting the face frame in sections like you do when you use shears. Learning from Nick is awesome because getting to be at one with someone who is an icon and who has so much expertise is a-once-in-a-lifetime experience.” — Meri Kate
“Having the opportunity to learn razor-cutting from Nick gives me an edge, not only over other students, but also over many professionals. I couldn’t have learned these skills at any other school.” — Melissa
“Our class is lucky enough to have Nick teach once a week. We practice advanced techniques like razor-cutting. It’s such a rare opportunity and I really appreciate the class time we have with him.” — Judy
“Nick makes using the razor look easy — but it’s not! After doing my own graduated razor bob, I have even more respect for stylists who have mastered this tool.” — Emily
“In an industry as competitive as hairstyling, specialized training gives you the edge. This is especially true when learning a skill like the razor. Learning this while still at school is something that puts me a step ahead of other new hair stylists.” — Kevin Baker
“ARROJO has given me education I could not imagine finding anywhere else. We have been so fortunate to learn many techniques and use many tools of the craft. The razor has been especially exciting. It’s a little intimidating at first, but learning from Nick has given me great inspiration and knowledge. It is exciting to know that Nick is helping us create a great foundation.” — Hannah
“The razor is an amazing tool. You can go from short to long so easily and even disconnected cuts have a fluid and connected feel. We’ve had an incredible opportunity to learn razor-cutting from its pioneer. By learning from Nick I feel prepared to use the tool immediately after school, which is awesome!” — Evelyn
The goal of ARROJO cosmetology is to deliver inspirational, career-shaping education to each student. So far, so good.
