A little effort goes a long way! Just ask Class 18 student, Leonor Del Castillo, who recently won a scholarship competition hosted by Beauty Changes Lives and the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS). Beauty Changes Lives, a non-profit initiative, was designed by AACS to raise awareness of how careers in the hair, beauty and wellness industry transform lives both personally and professionally.
Students were challenged to answer the two-part question, ‘How does ‘beauty change lives,’ and ‘how will you change lives as a beauty and wellness professional?’ The applicants entered to win a day with a celebrity mentor to help launch their career in the industry.
Leo chose to enter the scholarship competition because she wanted to express her passion for the beauty industry to her peers.
She says, “I have always loved doing hair, but I like to make people feel good even more. I think that being a stylist gives me the ability to make someone feel great every day and that’s what I look forward to doing when I get started.”
Leo had some tough competition. With nearly 100 entries from cosmetology students all over the country, she was convinced that her submission wouldn’t be chosen. But Leo’s compassion and dedication to her craft was clearly evident in her video, and she was selected by the Beauty Changes Lives panel to spend a day with Diana Schmidtke, Celebrity Stylist for Hollywood’s leading men. Schmidtke’s work has been featured in Esquire, Men’s Journal, Vogue, GQ, New York Times, W Magazine, and InStyle as well as on TV and movie screens.
Now that she’s won, Leo says, “I’m very excited to spend a day with Diana Schmidtke! I know I will learn a lot from her so I’m really looking forward to the experience. This is such a great opportunity to meet someone who shares my dreams and passion - and I can’t wait to pick her brain!”
