Class 7 graduate Lula Graves came to ARROJO Cosmetology School intending to become a hair and makeup artist for theater, film and television. What she found when she got here kick-started a journey to a surprisingly different destination - the creation of her own skincare line, Lady Libertine Honestly Edible Skinfood.
Lula says she chose ARROJO “because of the small class sizes and also because it felt very professional from the beginning - way above the standards of the other schools that I looked at. I also visited the student salon for a few services before I decided, and I was so impressed with the way the classes were run and the quality of work that the students were doing.”
The all-inclusive curriculum allowed Lula to discover her passion. “I didn’t expect to learn about product formulation going in,” she says, “but I sure am glad that I did! This knowledge has been invaluable to me. I’ve also thought about the ‘Start Your Own Salon’ project a lot during the process of starting up my business. I really loved that project, which I think was a clue.”
What Lula learned about products led to the launch of Lady Libertine Honestly Edible Skinfood. “When I began to find out about all the truly ineffective and often dangerous ingredients found in the majority of available skincare products, I was more than a little shocked and, quite frankly, I was disappointed. I went into the beauty industry to make people beautiful - and the products available to me were clearly not designed to do that! I knew I had to do something…that was how Lady Libertine was born.”
We asked Lula to share what made her so successful as a student. Her advice? “Take every opportunity to learn as much as you can. Even if some topics seem less fun than others, hang in there and get the most out of it. Do every assignment. Read every chapter. Be on time for every class. Pay attention. You never know what little piece of information might come along and change your life. Don’t miss it!”
