ARROJO alumni Mary Ducey was in our first class of cosmetology graduates. She joined Class 1 in January 2009 and quickly put her array of talents to use. Now a full-time colorist at ARROJO Studio, Mary also puts her background in education to good use as an educator in the same apprentice program that shaped her own career.
What sparked your interest in the beauty industry?
I have always been interested in hair, makeup and fashion. I wanted a career where I could be in control of my success and have a positive impact on people’s lives. I have an Associate’s Degree in Education, but I wanted to direct my career into a more creative industry.
How did you find ARROJO Cosmetology School?
In the beauty industry, there are varying degrees of talent and education. I wanted to have the best education from the start. I heard that Nick Arrojo was opening a cosmetology school through a friend who comes from a family of well-known hair stylists. After looking at the website and touring the facility, I knew it was the school for me.
What made ARROJO’s cosmetology program stand out to you?
The small class size allowed for a lot of one-on-one attention. We also had several guest stylists and colorists come in to teach us and talk about their profession. In this industry, there are so many options once you have your cosmetology license. I always said “yes” to the many opportunities I was offered and kept in mind the high standard and good work ethic I was introduced to at ARROJO Cosmetology School.
You were part of ARROJO’s first cosmetology class. Where are you now?
After I graduated, I was hired as an apprentice in the color department at ARROJO Studio. I completed the Color Apprentice program and have been a full-time colorist on the floor at ARROJO Studio for over a year. I’ve also been backstage at Fashion Week every year since graduating school and had the opportunity to work with designers such as Katie Gallagher, ARAKS, and former Versace Menswear Creative director, Aleksandre Pokhov. I’ve traveled all over the United States to do hair, makeup and wardrobe styling at industry trade shows. I’ve built a great clientele and now I’m a lead educator at ARROJO. I owe it all to my solid foundation at ARROJO Cosmetology School.
